{"id":295,"date":"2013-03-02T18:22:56","date_gmt":"2013-03-02T18:22:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/partridges.org.uk\/?page_id=295"},"modified":"2021-04-26T09:38:17","modified_gmt":"2021-04-26T08:38:17","slug":"late-romans","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/partridge.site\/blog\/index.php\/armies\/late-romans\/","title":{"rendered":"Late Romans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The vast majority of figures for these\u00a0are from <a title=\"Legio Heroica\" href=\"http:\/\/www.legio-heroica.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Legio Heroica<\/a>.\u00a0 I particularly like their figures, and especially their Roman figures.\u00a0 They are pretty chunky, which I like, but which I know other people don&#8217;t &#8211; YMMV.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also a pretty wide range, and includes Germanic figures as well, who are useful as foederati.\u00a0 The only figures in the ranges I don&#8217;t like so far though are the Germanic light infantry &#8211; they just aren&#8217;t dynamic enough.<\/p>\n<p>The idea behind this is that I should be able to use these figures for any Roman army from the Severan reforms up until Yarmuk &#8211; so covering Middle Imperial Roman, Late Imperial Roman, Patrician Roman, Early Byzantine or Maurikian Byzantine (although that is getting to be a bit of a stretch).<\/p>\n<p>First the legionaries.\u00a0 These are the main constant throughout the entire period.\u00a0 Once they have changed over to mail and flat oval shields, the equipment doesn&#8217;t really change for 3 centuries I think.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_290\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-290\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/partridge.site\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/4-DSC_2012.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-290\" src=\"https:\/\/partridge.site\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/4-DSC_2012.jpg\" alt=\"Legio Britannia Secunda\" width=\"1024\" height=\"686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/partridge.site\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/4-DSC_2012.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/partridge.site\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/4-DSC_2012-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/partridge.site\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/4-DSC_2012-768x515.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Legio Britannia Secunda<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The shield patterns probably did change.\u00a0 I am using transfers from LBM, which are (like everyone else,\u00a0 based on the <a href=\"http:\/\/lukeuedasarson.com\/NotitiaPatterns.html\">Notitia Dignitatum<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In the background on the right are two bases of Bd(X). These are the standard Bd but holding large clubs made from cut down match-sticks.
