Braudel is sparsely populated by humans who appear to maintain a pastoral lifestyle herding the Yurfal - a large native grazing animal. It is assumed that this is a regressed isolated human colony from the First or Second Imperium, but the locals are very xenophobic and no successful contact has been with them. They will attack all strangers on sight.
The locals have adapted to the tainted atmosphere and do not require respirators or artificial breathing aids.
The locals appear to use telepathy to herd the Yurfal, and there are indications that they have also used telepathy to deter visitors, or to get them to turn their weapons on each other or themselves, making attempting contact very hazardous.
