Sink

Drinax Subsector - Independent System

Sink is an anomaly. It is a Terran-prime world with plenty of surface water, a breathable atmosphere, and reasonable gravity. It is only two parsecs from Tyokh, and yet its only recognised population is a few hundred religious monastics in an ancient fortress monastery who seem to spend most of their time worshipping the swamps around it. Why is it not completely over-run by Aslan ihatei? Admittedly much of the terrain at the middle latitudes is flat and swampy, the seas are shallow, the atmosphere is warm and humid, storms can be ferocious, and it is home to some very large and dangerous predators, but none of those would stop a dedicated ihatei. The answer seems to be that something is preventing it - many attempts have been made over the last two centuries since the fall of Drinax, and none have succeeded. For the Aslan, Sink now has a bad and unlucky reputation. Ihatei routinely avoid or skip over Sink now.

It is not particularly welcoming to human settlers either - there are plenty of better worlds out there. Plus the existing inhabitants are not very welcoming. As mentioned before, these are a religious order that inhabits an ancient basalt monastery fortress complex. They are unwelcoming of interstellar visitors - the class D starport is basically a basalt platform attached to the monastery and has no facilities other than refuelling with low grade unrefined fuel. The main traffic is people coming to join The Order as they call themselves. The Order is secretive, and doesn't welcome visitors - non-members are not given hospitality unless they express an interest in joining The Order. Other postulants come as a result of missionaries sent out through the Drinax chain. The Order seems to have a vague religiosity that revolves around being good people, living in community and getting a reward for that in the afterlife. The community does seem to be genuinely egalitarian - contact with it has identified no charismatic or hereditary leader.

The rest of the planet is warm and swampy. There are few mountains or deep oceans, and no ice-caps. Life has tended towards size because of the benign conditions - there are a number of very large native and semi-native herbivores and predators. This makes settling on the rest of the planet difficult without serious resources.
